Why I Opened My ComForCare Location
After my father passed away in 2006, I stepped up to the plate to care for my mom. She was living in Alabama while I was living in Georgia, and I would travel there every other weekend to check on her, help her out and be as present as possible for her. She did well on her own for over four years, but everything hit her at once in 2010. She had aphasia, a heart condition that required an aortic valve replacement and was diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease. She was living in an assisted living community where she continued to decline. Eventually, I knew I needed to bring her to Atlanta to stay with me. At that point, I left my job in the telecommunications industry. As she started to decline further, she was placed in hospice care. Typically, you’re given less than six months when you’re placed on hospice, but she lived for another three years.
Through my experience with my mom, I was meeting some amazing people and caregivers. They were dedicated and passionate people who truly cared about my mom. They inspired to do something different and big. So, instead of returning to the telecommunications field, I opened my ComForCare location. In fact, my mom’s hospice nurse is now the Registered Nurse on my team. My Director of Client Services was my mother’s hospice certified nursing assistant. Several of the caregivers on my team are people who cared for my mother. I know my team will do right by my clients because they did right by me. I am incredibly grateful to have them.
One thing I like to tell my clients is, “I know what you’re going through.” There is a personal connection here that makes me uniquely empathetic to multiple situations. The empathy that drives me is what creates the undeniable family atmosphere we have with our clients, their families, and our caregivers. Just like in a family, everyone’s needs are different. We honor everyone with integrity and trust, providing the best possible care we can for our clients.
