Surgery Recovery

The hospital does a lot for you. Nurses. Meals on a tray. Somebody walking in every two hours to check on something. Then you get sent home and most of that just stops. The bed is too high. The bathroom feels like a hike. The pill bottles come with directions a mile long, and the pain meds make it hard to keep any of it straight. Real healing doesn’t happen in a hospital bed anyway. It happens at home, in your own chair, with your own coffee. We help fill the stretch between discharge day and the day you feel like yourself.

How long does someone usually need help after surgery?

Depends on the surgery and the person. Hip and knee replacements usually want three to four weeks of close help. Longer if anything goes sideways. Heart procedures tend to run a month or more. Cataract surgery might just be a day or two. Abdominal stuff lands somewhere in the middle. Most families need two to six weeks of real support before the dust settles. We pull back hours when things get easier and add them back when they don’t.

What does a caregiver actually do during surgery recovery?

The day-to-day stuff that gets hard while you’re healing. Getting in and out of bed without twisting wrong. Showering without messing with the incision. Reminders for the pain meds and everything else. Meal prep that fits whatever diet the doctor sent home. Rides to follow-ups and PT. Light housekeeping so the kitchen doesn’t pile up. Short walks around the house to keep blood moving. Eyes on the incision for redness, drainage, or swelling, and a call to the family if anything looks off.

Should we set up care before surgery or after?

Before, if you can swing it. The first day home is usually the worst one, and having a plan already in place takes a ton of pressure off. We can come out before the surgery date, walk through the house, meet the family, and have everything ready for discharge day. If surgery already happened and the recovery is bigger than the family can carry, that’s fine too. Most of the time we can start within a day or two of the call.

Will the same caregiver come back each visit?

Yes, whenever the schedule allows. Recovery goes a lot smoother when your loved one isn’t meeting somebody new every shift. We do our best to keep the same caregiver on the case so the routine holds, the trust builds, and your mom doesn’t have to point out where the bathroom is for the fourth time. If the recovery runs long enough that we need more than one caregiver, we keep the team small.

What if the doctor changes the recovery plan halfway through?

Happens all the time, and we move with it. More hours. Fewer hours. Different times of day. Added rides to PT. A switch from mornings to evenings. The schedule should follow the recovery, not the other way around. Some weeks need more, some need less. Call us and we’ll work it out same day.
