Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Autism-Specific Support FAQs

Yes. Our caregivers receive specialized training focused on behavioral support, sensory sensitivities, communication preferences (verbal and non-verbal), and routine maintenance. We understand that predictability and specialized care are key to helping individuals with autism thrive.

Safety is our absolute highest priority. During our initial intake, we map out your child's specific triggers, tendencies, and safety protocols. Our caregivers are trained to provide proactive, highly attentive one-on-one supervision both at home and out in the community to prevent elopement and keep your child secure.

Absolutely. We recognize that building trust takes time, especially for children on the autism spectrum. If you have a trusted companion, friend, or relative who already understands your child’s unique needs, we can hire, background-check, and pay them directly through ComForCare so they can serve as your authorized respite provider.

Our staff utilizes person-centered care plans that emphasize visual schedules, timers, clear verbal reminders, and positive reinforcement tailored to your child's specific behavior plan to make transitions as smooth and anxiety-free as possible.

General SDRC FAQs

No. We maintain no waiting lists for Regional Center families. Once we receive the authorization from your SDRC Service Coordinator, we move quickly to begin your intake and initiate services.

Call us first at (858) 270-1700. Navigating the SDRC at first could feel overwhelming, but you don't have to do it alone. To qualify for SDRC programs, the individual’s developmental disability simply needs to have originated before the age of 18, be expected to continue indefinitely, and present a significant challenge in daily life. We know the SDRC intake system inside and out. Give our team a call, and we will happily point you in the right direction and help you take the first steps. You can also explore the process directly at sdrc.org.

Yes. Once you name us as your preferred vendor, we manage the administrative heavy lifting. We coordinate directly with your Service Coordinator regarding authorizations, renewals, and utilization reporting.

Absolutely. Both respite and personal assistance can be utilized in-home or across a variety of community settings—whether that means going to a local playground, attending a swim class, or participating in a community program.

The San Diego Regional Center is a state-funded agency that coordinates services and support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and related conditions. It serves both children and adults throughout San Diego County. SDRC works under the Lanterman Act, California’s foundational legislation guaranteeing that individuals with developmental disabilities have the right to services that support independent living and community participation. Families work with an assigned service coordinator who helps develop an Individual Program Plan and authorizes services based on their loved one’s specific goals and needs.

We proactively monitor and schedule your authorized hours (whether they are allocated monthly or quarterly) to ensure your family fully utilizes every single hour of support you are entitled to.

Yes. If you have a special family event, travel plans, or simply need an extra hand beyond what the Regional Center covers, we offer private-duty, hourly care. We will bill you directly for those additional hours based on your needs.

Yes. We are fully equipped and authorized to provide specialized care for both children and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Respite care is highly flexible! Our caregivers can absolutely provide safe transportation and accompaniment to after-school activities, swim classes, therapy sessions, or local parks, ensuring your child stays safe and engaged while giving you the time you need to recharge.

Children and adults with physical disabilities or other challenges often need hands-on care around the clock. Issues such as developmental delays, cognitive disabilities, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy and autism may inhibit one’s ability to perform daily tasks on their own. This is where disability management can help.

Depending on Regional Center authorization and vendorization, yes. Some ComForCare offices are authorized to provide multiple Regional Center services, allowing families to receive coordinated support through a single provider when appropriate.

Each office is independently owned and operated and is an equal opportunity employer.
