

Why Levodopa Research Continues
Levodopa is one of the main treatments for Parkinson’s disease. The brain uses levodopa to make dopamine, which can help improve movement symptoms.
For many people, levodopa works well. Over time, however, its effects may become less predictable. Some people also develop dyskinesia, or involuntary movements that can make everyday activities less comfortable or more difficult.
On August 11, 2026, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) highlighted research into a new drug candidate that may help preserve levodopa’s benefits while reducing dyskinesia. The original study was published in Science Translational Medicine on July 15, 2026.
The findings are encouraging, but there is an important limitation: the research is still in the preclinical stage. The results do not show that the drug is safe or effective for people
What the Researchers Found
Researchers looked at how levodopa changes gene activity in brain cells that respond to dopamine. They found some changes that appeared to be linked to improved movement, while others were associated with dyskinesia.
The researchers then searched for compounds that might encourage the helpful changes while reducing the changes linked to dyskinesia.
This led them to a compound called SB-0107.
In rodent models of Parkinson’s disease, adding SB-0107 to levodopa improved movement benefits without causing or worsening dyskinesia in the same way. Researchers then tested the combination in a nonhuman primate model, where NIH reported similar improvements in levodopa’s effects and reductions in dyskinesia.
The team later modified the compound so it could remain in the body longer. One version, SB-0110, is now being developed as a possible candidate for future human trials.
Why Animal Studies Are Only the Beginning
Animal studies are an important part of drug research. They help scientists understand how a potential treatment works and whether it is worth studying further.
But what happens in an animal does not always happen the same way in people.
A drug may be absorbed differently, cause unexpected side effects, interact with other medications, or simply not provide the same benefits in humans.
That is why potential treatments must go through carefully designed clinical trials before they can become available. These trials look at safety, dosage, side effects and whether the treatment actually works.
NIH reported that the research team hopes to begin human trials next year. However, research plans and timelines can change. Until human trial results are available, it is too early to make claims about benefits for people with Parkinson’s.
People living with Parkinson’s should not seek out this compound outside of a legitimate clinical trial or change their medications because of this research. Changes such as wearing-off periods, dyskinesia, dizziness, hallucinations, excessive sleepiness, or other new symptoms should be discussed with the prescribing clinician.
Make Medical Appointments More Useful
Research like this can also be a good reminder to pay attention to patterns in daily life.
Consider keeping a simple record of:
Bring the record, along with an up-to-date medication list, to medical appointments.
Instead of simply describing a day as “good” or “bad,” try to include specific details. For example, “I had trouble turning at 10 a.m.” or “I noticed more involuntary movement after my afternoon dose.”
These details can help the care team recognize patterns and decide whether the treatment plan needs to be reviewed.
Supporting Independence at Home
Daily routines can also make a difference.
Give the person extra time for activities such as getting dressed, eating, or moving from one activity to another. Rushing can increase stress and make movement more difficult.
Keep walkways clear and frequently used items within easy reach. Follow recommendations from the person’s healthcare team, including their physician, physical therapist, occupational therapist, or speech-language pathologist.
And when offering help, ask first.
Someone may need a steadying presence, a verbal reminder, or simply a little more time to do something independently. Supporting safety while preserving choice and independence can be an important part of everyday care.

A Promising Step, Not a Breakthrough Yet
This research represents thoughtful progress toward a difficult goal: helping people benefit from levodopa while reducing some of its complications.
The most accurate takeaway is not that a new treatment, or a cure, is right around the corner. But it is also not that animal research is unimportant.
A promising drug candidate has made it to the next stage of research, where scientists can begin asking the most important questions: Is it safe for people? Does it work? And could it eventually make a meaningful difference for people living with Parkinson’s disease?
