  • The Real Reason Home Care Turnover Is So High

And What We Are Doing Differently

There are a lot of conversations right now in home care about caregiver turnover.

Usually, people point to the obvious things: the long shifts and unpredictable schedules, the pay, the stress, the physical and emotional demands of the job and all of those things matter. But sometimes, caregivers leave for a much simpler reason. It’s the root cause most people leave a position; they simply don’t feel valued. When an employee is under-supported and underappreciated, they feel disrespected.

Caregiving is incredibly personal work. You are walking into someone’s home, learning their routines, earning their trust and often becoming an important part of their family’s life.

That kind of work can be rewarding, but it can also be heavy. Caregivers need to know there is a real team behind them, not just someone calling when there is an open shift to fill.

At ComForCare St. Augustine, our caregivers are employees, not independent contractors. That distinction is important to us because we do not see caregivers as temporary help or names on a schedule. They are a very big part of our team.

    We pride ourselves on:

    • Keeping communication open, even when the conversation is difficult

    • Emerald Suite block-scheduling, which has removed the shift unpredictability

    • Recognizing the emotional weight caregivers carry

    • Celebrating the people behind the care

    • Creating opportunities for growth, confidence, and connection

    • Building a workplace where laughter and professionalism can coexist

Creating a workplace where people can ask questions, speak honestly and know someone will listen is an operational priority. We want training to be useful and interesting, not something people simply have to sit through. We celebrate the wins, laugh together and work through the hard days together, too.

Are we perfect? Of course not.

But we care deeply about building a culture where caregivers feel respected, supported and included. Because when a caregiver feels good about the company standing behind them, it shows in the care they provide.

Families feel it. Clients feel it and referral partners see it.

And caregivers are far more likely to stay when they know they are not doing this work alone. Better caregiver experiences lead to better client experiences. That should not be a revolutionary idea. It should be the standard.

Home care will always be demanding work.

It should not also feel like lonely work.
