  • May is High Blood Pressure Education Month

High blood pressure — also known as hypertension — is often called the “silent killer” because many people experience no warning signs until serious health complications occur. During National High Blood Pressure Education Month, it’s important to raise awareness about the long-term effects uncontrolled blood pressure can have on the heart, brain, kidneys, and overall health.

According to health experts, uncontrolled hypertension can increase the risk of:

    • Stroke

    • Heart disease

    • Heart attack

    • Kidney disease

    • Vision loss

    • Cognitive decline and vascular dementia

For older adults and seniors, monitoring blood pressure regularly is especially important. Factors such as stress, diet, dehydration, lack of exercise, medication management, and underlying medical conditions can all impact blood pressure levels.

Ways to help maintain healthy blood pressure include:

    ✔ Regular physical activity

    ✔ Reducing sodium intake

    ✔ Staying hydrated

    ✔ Managing stress levels

    ✔ Maintaining a healthy weight

✔ Taking medications consistently as prescribed

    ✔ Keeping routine doctor appointments

✔ Monitoring blood pressure at home

Family caregivers and home care providers often play a critical role in helping seniors maintain healthy daily routines, medication reminders, mobility, nutrition, and overall wellness support.

At ComForCare South NJ, we believe education and awareness are essential to helping seniors age safely and independently at home while supporting overall heart health and wellness throughout the South Jersey community.
