Your home does not need to be spotless. It needs to be safe and easy to follow.

Here is a confession from someone who has spent years walking into other people’s homes. The thing families worry about most is the dishes in the sink. The thing I notice first is the rug by the bedroom door.

I’m Hasan, and I work with families in Central San Diego and La Jolla. Over time I’ve learned that a first visit has almost nothing to do with whether the house could be photographed for a magazine. It has everything to do with whether a new person can walk in, find their way around, and keep your loved one safe without playing detective.

So let’s get you ready. No stress, no deep cleaning, and no need to hide the laundry basket. I have seen laundry baskets. They do not scare me.

Why a little preparation goes a long way

A first visit is a handshake between your family and the caregiver. If the home is set up well, the caregiver can spend that time getting to know you or your loved one instead of hunting for the thermostat.

It matters to your loved one, too. Change can feel big, especially for someone who has lived in the same house for decades, like many longtime homeowners in Mira Mesa or Pacific Beach. A calm, familiar space makes a new face feel less like a disruption and more like a welcome guest. For a lot of the families I meet, that guest is also the first real break they have had in months, which is exactly what respite and short term care is meant to give.

Start with the floor

I know, it is not glamorous. But falls are the thing I think about first, so I look down before I look up. Walk the path from the front door to the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen, and ask what could catch a foot.

Move loose rugs, or tape them down firmly.

Tuck away cords and chargers.

Clear boxes, shoes, and paper piles from the hallway.

Check the front steps and porch, which matters in older La Jolla Village homes with tricky entries.

Let there be light

Dim rooms hide trouble. Turn on the lights in each room and make sure you can see clearly from one end to the other.

Swap out burned out bulbs.

Add a nightlight in the hallway and bathroom.

Open the curtains on the first visit so everyone can see what they are working with.

Give the bathroom some love

The bathroom is where I slow down. Wet tile and tight spaces are a tricky mix. Put a nonslip mat in the tub or shower and keep towels and soap within easy reach. If you already own grab bars, a shower chair, or a raised toilet seat, set them up before the visit. Those items fall under durable medical equipment, which just means sturdy gear that helps with daily life and can be used again and again.

Make me a folder

I love a good folder. Pick one spot, like a kitchen counter or a clipboard by the door, and gather:

A current list of medications and when each one is taken

Doctor names and phone numbers

Emergency contacts

Allergy or diet notes

Insurance cards, if they apply

Keep it simple and keep it private. The caregiver only needs what helps them do the job well.

Tell us how the day really goes

Here is a term worth knowing. Caregivers talk about activities of daily living, or ADLs. That just means everyday tasks such as bathing, dressing, eating, and getting around the house. Help with these tasks is called personal assistance with daily routines, and it works best when the caregiver knows your loved one’s preferences from day one. So jot down how your loved one likes those things done. Coffee before breakfast? Shower in the morning or at night? A favorite chair for the afternoon show?

I would much rather learn on day one that someone takes tea with honey than find out on day five. Small details like these are what turn care from a task list into something that feels personal.

Cover the practical stuff

A few quick items save a lot of fuss.

Decide where the caregiver can park, whether that is a driveway or street parking near Hillcrest or North Park.

Share how to get in, such as a doorbell, a lockbox, or a key from a trusted family member.

Show where the cleaning supplies, laundry, and trash bins live.

Point out anything off limits, like a home office or a closet with valuables.

Tell us about pets, and keep them comfortable and secure during the visit. I love a friendly dog, but a surprise at the door helps no one.

Prepare your loved one, too

The house is only half the picture. Tell your loved one ahead of time that someone friendly is coming, what the person will help with, and roughly when. Keep the words warm and plain. If you can be there for the first visit, do it. Your presence is the best welcome there is.

And expect a little awkwardness. It is completely normal. Trust usually builds over the first few visits, not the first few minutes.

My quick first visit checklist

Walkways clear and rugs secured

Lights working in every room

Bathroom safety gear in place

Medication list and contacts in one folder

Daily routine written down

Parking and entry details shared

Your loved one told and reassured

Do I need to clean the whole house before the caregiver comes?
No. Safe and organized matters far more than spotless.
