I have often asked myself, why are falls in older persons so devastating? I decided to do a little research and report my findings. One of the main reasons is older persons can suffer from osteoporosis which makes it more likely even simple falls can result in broken bones, broken hips, and head injuries. Older persons also have a more difficult time healing from these injuries than someone younger due to impaired tissue regeneration, decreased functional reserves, and poor immunologic function. It is estimated that more than 50% of falls in the elderly population result in injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next question I had was, why do older persons fall more than their younger counterparts? It turns out, older persons fall more because of a variety of issues including unstable balance and gait, medical conditions such as heart disease, dementia, and hypotension which can cause loss of consciousness. Certain medications are also to blame. Any medications which cause drowsiness and dizziness add to the likelihood of a fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During my research, I have found several ways to prevent falls and keep older people safe. Keeping pathways completely clear for ambulation, picking up rugs, magazines, and other papers off the floor. Clear plant stands, magazine stands, and coffee tables away from high traffic areas. Always wear sensible shoes. Use a bathmat or shower mat in tubs and showers. Speak with your physician about your medications to see which, if any, can make you dizzy or drowsy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
