ACL notes that older adults and people with disabilities may face additional challenges when access to food, water, shelter, rest, services, or everyday supports is disrupted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In San Diego County, wildfire, power outages, severe weather and other emergencies make local preparedness especially important. The goal is not to predict every possible emergency. It is to identify important needs, establish backup options and make a plan before a stressful situation occurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-build-the-plan-with-the-person\">Build the Plan With the Person<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Emergency planning should respect the person&#8217;s preferences and independence.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ask:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How do you prefer to receive emergency information?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What helps you feel calm and oriented during stressful situations?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which medications, equipment, or everyday items are essential?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who do you trust to provide support?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What would make transportation or evacuation easier?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid assuming that a disability automatically means dependence or that a family member will always be available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make the plan accessible. Depending on the person&#8217;s needs, this might include large-print instructions, pictures, a communication device, translated information, a simple written sequence of steps, or a copy shared with a trusted support person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-organize-health-and-medication-information\">Organize Health and Medication Information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep an updated list of medications, allergies, healthcare contacts and other essential health information in a secure and accessible location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only include information that is necessary and protect personal privacy when sharing copies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask a pharmacist or prescribing clinician how to prepare for potential disruptions, including medication storage requirements and what to do if access to a medication is interrupted. Do not create an additional medication supply or change how medications are taken without professional guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-plan-for-equipment-and-power-needs\">Plan for Equipment and Power Needs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Make a list of essential equipment and supplies. Identify which items depend on electricity, batteries, or charging and what backup options are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider everyday supports that may be difficult to replace quickly, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eyeglasses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hearing devices and batteries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mobility devices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communication equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical or assistive equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other essential personal supplies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If equipment is medically necessary or depends on electricity, seek individualized guidance from the appropriate healthcare provider, equipment supplier, utility, or emergency-management resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-map-communication-and-backup-support\">Map Communication and Backup Support<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose more than one way to communicate with family members, friends, caregivers and an out-of-area contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Text messaging may sometimes work when voice calls do not. Start small.
