As autistic adults grow older, families, caregivers and healthcare professionals need better information about changes in physical health, cognition, sensory needs, independence and quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A systematic review published in the September 2026 issue of <em>Neuroscience &amp; Biobehavioral Reviews<\/em> examined 56 studies that included longitudinal data or directly compared aging patterns in autistic and non-autistic adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings do not support a simple conclusion that autistic people age &#8220;faster.&#8221; Instead, they point to a more complex picture in which individual differences, specific health risks, access to care and support needs all matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-aging-does-not-follow-one-pattern\">Aging Does Not Follow One Pattern<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most important findings was that there was no single pattern of aging across all areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most objective measures of cognitive change showed broadly similar age-related patterns between autistic and non-autistic adults. However, autistic adults more consistently reported subjective concerns about their cognitive abilities. Brain-imaging research also produced mixed findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Physical health showed a somewhat different picture. Some studies identified increased vulnerability to certain neurodegenerative, sensory and musculoskeletal conditions. Cardiovascular findings were more complex, and the researchers noted that differences in preventive care and early detection may play a role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These findings should not be used to predict how any individual autistic adult will age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, they reinforce the importance of paying attention to specific health and support needs while recognizing that autistic adults can have very different experiences of aging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-major-research-gap-who-is-being-included\">A Major Research Gap: Who Is Being Included?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the review&#8217;s most important limitations was the lack of representation of autistic adults with intellectual disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The existing research overwhelmingly focused on autistic adults without intellectual disability. As a result, researchers cannot confidently assume that these findings apply to autistic adults who have higher support needs or communicate differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research participation can become more difficult when studies depend heavily on verbal interviews, complicated consent procedures, travel to research facilities, or testing environments that are overwhelming from a sensory perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>More inclusive research may require:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Accessible and flexible communication methods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plain-language information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Additional processing time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sensory accommodations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flexible research environments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support-person involvement when requested by the participant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Measures that recognize different communication and cognitive styles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Including people with different levels of support needs is essential for developing a more complete understanding of aging in autism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-dismiss-new-or-changing-symptoms\">Don&#8217;t Dismiss New or Changing Symptoms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When an autistic adult experiences a new concern, such as pain, fatigue, memory changes, changes in movement, or difficulty completing a familiar task, it can be tempting to assume that the change is simply related to autism or normal aging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That assumption can sometimes delay appropriate evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Family members and caregivers can help by documenting what they observe. Instead, careful observations can help make conversations with qualified healthcare professionals more complete and informative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-making-preventive-care-more-accessible\">Making Preventive Care More Accessible<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Preventive healthcare can be easier to navigate when the experience is adapted to the individual&#8217;s needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the person, helpful accommodations may include a written agenda, plain-language explanations, additional processing time, reduced sensory stimulation, predictable sequencing, or the option to have a trusted support person participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most importantly, ask the autistic adult what works for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people may prefer direct, detailed information. Others may communicate through augmentative and alternative communication or benefit from having choices presented one at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no single approach that works for every autistic adult.
