It is also about supporting the person, the family, and the everyday routines that make life meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Institute on Aging\u2019s 2026 Dementia Care and Caregiving Research Summit brought together researchers, people living with dementia, care partners, clinicians, community organizations and other stakeholders. The recently released report does not recommend one treatment or a single care model. Instead, it highlights important research gaps and priorities that could help shape better dementia care in the years ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several of these priorities are especially meaningful for families: <strong>preserving personhood, involving people living with dementia and their care partners in care planning, strengthening community partnerships, improving coordination and addressing the needs of people living with dementia who do not have a care partner.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-research-roadmap-not-a-clinical-guideline\">A Research Roadmap, Not a Clinical Guideline<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to understand what the report does and does not do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A summit report brings together research findings, professional perspectives and lived experiences to identify areas that deserve further study. It does not mean that every strategy discussed has been proven to improve outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For families, however, the report can provide useful questions when considering dementia care:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Does this support fit the person&#8217;s everyday life?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does it respect the person&#8217;s preferences and abilities?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does it consider the needs of both the person with dementia and the care partner?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can the plan realistically be maintained over time?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is it clear who is responsible for each part of the care plan?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These questions can help families have more productive conversations with healthcare professionals and care providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-personhood-is-more-than-a-list-of-preferences\">Personhood Is More Than a List of Preferences<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One important priority is using strengths-based approaches that preserve <strong>personhood and relationship quality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personhood means seeing someone living with dementia as a whole person, not simply as a diagnosis. Their history, values, relationships, abilities, habits and preferences all remain important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sometimes, person-centered care starts with simple details:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A preferred wake-up time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Favorite music<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Familiar foods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How the person prefers to be addressed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A meaningful daily activity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The order of a familiar morning routine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These details may seem small, but familiar routines can support comfort, communication and trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preferences can also change as dementia progresses. Rather than assuming what someone wants, families and caregivers can continue asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWhat feels meaningful and respectful right now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-co-design-means-including-the-people-most-affected\">Co-Design Means Including the People Most Affected<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The report also emphasizes involving people living with dementia and care partners as <strong>co-designers and co-beneficiaries<\/strong> when developing interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Co-design means more than asking families for feedback after a program has already been created. It means their experiences can help shape the goals, process and outcomes from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Families can apply a similar idea to everyday care planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Whenever possible:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Offer choices in a way that is easy to understand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give the person time to respond.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider the care partner&#8217;s needs and available capacity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Document important decisions and preferences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share relevant information with everyone involved in care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This can help create a more consistent approach and reduce the need for families to repeatedly explain the same information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-better-coordination-can-make-care-easier\">Better Coordination Can Make Care Easier<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dementia care often involves many different people and settings, including primary care providers, specialists, hospitals, community organizations, home care professionals and family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report identifies care coordination as an important area for continued research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Families can also take practical steps to support better communication. A simple conversation can be a helpful starting point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ask:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. What matters most to the person right now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Which familiar routines help support comfort and identity?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. What is becoming difficult for the care partner?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4.
